Understanding Economic Sanctions on Iran: A Survey

Abstract This paper surveys the literature on economic effects of sanctions Iran, with a principal focus those imposed after 2006. We discuss challenges isolating impacts and evaluate recent methodological approaches used to measure causal effects. Specifically, we application synthetic control method disaggregate exogenous endogenous factors responsible for underperformance in Iran. review studies macroeconomic Iran examine that sectoral sanctions. Our survey reveals large growing body remains incomplete. There are significant gaps existing research impact will likely remain most important case study as researchers seek fill gaps.
